Richard Lea: The struggle between science and superstition in Asimov’s classic short story rings as true today as it did 70 years ago. Second, the whole story in Nightfall revolves around an impending very rare solar eclipse of the one sun out of six that is in the sky at the time. The classic science-fiction tale “Nightfall” is set on a planet where night only falls every 2, years. Now, a scientist proposes a planet could.

There wouldn’t be any native inhabitants. Because Kalgashians have sunlight every hour of the day, they grow accustomed to having light no matter what.

Nightfall (Asimov novelette and novel) – Wikipedia

Astrophysicist Sean Raymond’s Kalgash 4 concept would place a planet in permanent daylight using a system with a black hole at nighttall center and the planet orbiting between two rings of sun-like stars.

But he’s even better at imagining just how far the universe can exceed our expectations. And Sheerin slammed his fist down upon the table in sudden passion.

Nightfall and Other Stories is an excellent addition to my library, and one I will cherish for many days to come. These stories are by no means wall to wall brilliant, but Asimov’s personal introductions to each one really put them in context both in his career and his state of mind at the time of writing.

Raymond then sought out to illuminate the side of a planet facing away from its central star. Schnarr rated it liked it.

Beklimot is in a sandy, arid desert region. I suppose one of the great things about “Nightfall” is that it succeeds here.

One version of Kalgash that Raymond modeled, dubbed Kalgash 2, had a black hole a few thousand times the sun’s mass with eight sun-like stars in a ring around it 40 astronomical units AU wide, an AU being the average distance between Earth and the sun, about 93 million miles million kilometers. It’s a beautiful day: The scientists theorize that earlier civilizations were destroyed by people who became insane during previous eclipses and—desperate for any light source—started large fires that destroyed cities.

This leaves no room for any depth. He knew that if humanity kept fighting each other they would develop war tactics and arms that the aliens, who did not fight each other, would never come up with. It’s very unfortunate that he decided to expand the novel, because his verbose meandering is so jarring compared to Asimov’s succinct prose. On his way to jail, he is informed by Geoffrey that his plan would not work because the aliens already had pacts with the other xhort and if he had succeeded it would have been Earth versus the aliens and other human planets.

I suppose you could call the additions a prologue and an epilogue, but they are really too long for that; more of a prequel and a sequel to the original story.

For better or worse, Asimov wrote in an era of volume – the economics of the pulps, and his own nighftall nature, lead him to put every idea on the sory, even those that didn’t really merit it. The next day Jacob reads that Gellhorn was found dead, with tire marks on his back. This communication can be highly influential: Scientists on the planet Kalgash discover that an eclipse – an event that occurs only every years – is imminent, and tha.

Insert Knob into hole B: After hanging up he is astonished when less than a minute later Cliff comes walking in through the door.

Asimov’s Nightfall short story

After Jake turns him away, Gellhorn returns with nightfapl, but they are no match for “Sally”, Matthew, and the rest of the cars with minds of their own The first and most basic reason is that it has a unique storyline.

And this is where he is at hsort best. The story opens at Saro University on the eve of the first night in years, as a rare alignment of stars and planets is set to send half the world into darkness for “well over half a day”. Sometimes I feel science-fiction tales can get too bogged down in nigghtfall facts, attempting to explain things to their readers and my eyes just glaze over at the utter scienceness of it all.

The storyline is one of the most intriguing that I have ever read: That he killed the alien to keep the news secret. It adds to the believability of the main premise. After taking this unearthing to his professor Athor, Beenay and a team of scientists conclude that the only possible way this anomaly can occur is the consequence of another astronomical body that orbits Kalgash. What’s the Name o Astronomers predict this happening and everyone is dreading the darkness.

The final resolution of the story is not that bad in itself, but the way it is nightvall is anti-climactic. Refresh and try again. Now imagine each sun setting, leaving only a single one in the sky, and at such a distance, it can be blocked by an almost stoy planet – creating what is essentially a world-wide eclipse that will plunge civilization into darkness for one whole night.

Nightfall and Other Stories

Nightfall was the story that put Asimov on the map as an important science fiction writer. InNightfalla low-budget movie, was produced based upon the story. Receiving this story Earth sends another ship which this time is prepared. Es shor historia que funciona mejor como relato que como libro. Asimov is so great, always asking questions, posing interesting situations, and imagining life in ways I never thought of.
